:: 09-03-1999 "The Worcester 6" ::

The Worcester Fire Department protects the lives and property of nearly 175,400 in approximately 39 square miles running out of 12 stations with 15 Engine Companies 7 Ladder Companies 1 Heavy Rescue & 3 District Chiefs.

The Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse building was built in 1906 and measured 88x88 with a addition built in 1912 measuring about 70x120 both were six floors high with 7000-8000 square feet of space on each floor and had been used as a large meat processing and storage facility. The Worcester Cold Storage company occupied the building along with Chicago Dressed Beef who sold the large "L" Shaped building to CDB Realty Trust on May 14, 1987, The Worcester Cold Storage Company occupied the building until the Fall of 1988 when they relocated operations to Millbrook Street, the refrigeration system was eventually shut down in 1989. The nearly windowless building stood vacant for eleven years with no fire alarm or working sprinkler systems and minimal if any security or building maintenance making a great place for vandals and vagrants to reside.

On December 3, 1999 at 18:13 the Worcester fire alarm office transmitted Box 1438 Franklin Street & Arctic Street for a reported building fire behind the Kenmore diner at 250 Franklin Street Engines 1,6,12,13 Ladders, 1 & 5 Rescue 1 and Car 3 responded. While crews were enroute fire alarm notified command a off duty police officer on Route 290 Eastbound was reporting smoke from the top of the building, Shortly thereafter Engine 1 arrived and reported heavy smoke showing from the roof of 266 Franklin Street the Worcester Cold Storage Building and initiated a interior operation, on what was then believed to be a manageable fire. Car 3 transmitted a 2nd Alarm on arrival, at 18:18 Engines 2,16 Aeriel Scope 2 & Car 2 responded. Engine 13 reported a fire condition in the elevator shaft on floors 2 & 3 moments later Ladder 1 transmitted a urgent message reporting a heavy fire condition in a floor 2 freezer room and requested a company with a handline to assist shortly after members from Rescue 1 reported heavy smoke and embers from the roof and reported the fire in the building nearest the highway. At 18:24 the owner of the Kenmore Diner reported possibly two homeless people inside and additional members entered to preform search and rescue operations, Chief McNamee transmitted a 3rd Alarm at 18:40 with Engines 3,7 & Ladder 2 dispatched.

At 18:46 Firefighter Brotherton & Firefighter Lucey (Rescue 1) radio command they were lost, another radio transmission was made notifying command they were one floor down from the top floor low on air, During this time Engine 1 was reporting to companies on floor two to back down due to rapidly deteriorating conditions. At 18:47 Rescue 1 transmitted another Emergency Message reporting that they were low on air and buddy breathing. A 4th Alarm was subsequently transmitted at 18:52 With Engines 8,15 Ladder 4 responding. Command ordered the two missing members of Rescue 1 to activate their PASS devices at 18:55 Rescue 1 responded by stating "They Are Activated!" this is the last intelligible message heard from the crew. Two members From Ladder 2 (Lieutenant Spencer/Firefighter Jackson) and two members from Engine 3 (Firefighter Lyons/Firefighter Mcguirk) searched for the missing men at 19:08 Ladder 2 radioed to command to have a crew start yelling from the stairwell to help them find the way back down they were low on air on the fifth floor, At 19:15 Ladder 2 made there last call stating "were done" this is the last time the four man search crew of Ladder 2 & Engine 3 was heard from. The 5th alarm was struck at 19:26 bringing Engines 5,10 & Car 4 to the scene At 19:51 Heavy fire broke thru the vent hole 30 feet into the air shooting over the billboard that sat atop the building immediately adjacent to the highway, At 19:58 Car 3 made the biggest decision of his career evacuating the building switching to a exterior or defensive attack and having to uphold his order by standing in the doorway and push back firefighters who tried to reenter the building to search. Eventually mutual aid from around the state arrived to relieve Worcester firefighters and staff the apparatus that was flowing water from the dozens of ladder pipes set up on all sides as the building turned into a inferno known to some as "The Perfect Fire", the operation lasted twenty hours.

The recovery operation began on Saturday Afternoon December 4th once the heaviest fire was knocked down and a wrecking crew could safely begin working, Firefighters from around Massachusetts and other Members of the search worked 24 hours a day for eight days and called the buildings "A" Building & "B" Building. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors collapsed down onto floor 2 which was called "The Deck", The first fallen firefighter was found on Sunday morning December 5th but it took until a week later December 11th for the final fallen firefighters to be found. On December 11, 1999 the recall was sounded on Box 1438 and the healing process began.

The fire was started earlier on Friday afternoon December 3rd by two homeless people who inadvertently knocked over a lit candle during a fight. They never reported the fire which burned undetected and fed on the contents and other combustible material in a floor two office area before spreading thru void spaces to upper floors until smoke became visible from the top of the elevator shaft on the roof. Six charges of manslaughter were filed and subsequently dropped on the two subjects involved on September 19, 2000. A fence remains at the site and memorializes the lives of the men now known as "The Worcester 6", A new firehouse is being constructed on the site to replace the fire station that was demolished to make room for the expanding downtown area. The Worcester Fire Department has also implemented several safety procedures since the fire including but not limited to the placarding of dangerous vacant buildings around the city.

This was the first time in 21 years that six or more firefighters have been killed from injuries sustained in the line of duty during a structural fire, On August 2, 1978 six New York City Firefighters were killed when the roof of the burning building they were working on collapsed at the corner of Avenue Y & Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn.
